The Rochester Area Flyers (RAF) is a club of hang gliding and paragliding enthusiasts who meet monthly to discuss flying techniques, experiences, instruction, site regulations and equipment. Meetings frequently include film footage of hang gliding in the Rochester area. Club meetings are typically the second Tuesday of every month (except May, June, July, August, and December) --check eventsfor location. The meetings begin at 7:30pm. Check the current events for actual meeting details.
For the first time this year the club is offering a "Check It Out" program for only $50. There you will learn all you need to know to make an informed decision whether hang gliding is a sport for you. "Check It Out"
The RAF has access to several hang gliding/paragliding sites within a two hour drive from Rochester. Sites are administered by the RAF on a volunteer basis. We maintain and protect them with a high regard to the relationships we have nurtured with the gracious landowners. You MUST have a current and valid RAF membership (this includes a current and valid USHPA membership) with the proper ratings to fly these sights. The sites page contains up-to-date site status and protocol.
Once a year the RAF has a two month hang gliding training program which begins around the end of April. The primary training hill is located in Farmington, NY, which is a few minutes from the Victor exit (#44) on the NYS Thruway.
The RAF is chapter #16 of the United States Hang Gliding Association (USHPA). The club has two membership levels. See the Membership Form for more details.
